Tarnedrift Steps
Sella
“A tiny woman about 2 feet tall with silver braids, a moss-green shawl, and dirt-smudged knees beside a row of rosemary pots.”
Sella is a quiet balcony gardener who fits in a grown-up’s lap and spends hours tending pots, bells, and vine strings. She listens to the weather as if it were a talking friend and notices small troubles before they grow.

Where you've met them
The Birds Peck the Roofs
A flock of basket-sized cloud birds lands on the market steps and begins pecking every bright roof tile they can reach. Their pecking is cracking the tiles and sending tiny showers of slate into the walkways, so the steps become unsafe unless someone can quickly redirect the birds.
The Lantern Pulls Too Hard
A big celebration lantern is carried to the highest landing, but its flame is drawing in too much lift from the warm air and pulling the lantern line taut across several walkways. If the lantern is not brought under control, it will snag clotheslines, trip runners, and maybe tear free into the open sky.
The Platform Starts to Drift
On the Tarnedrift Steps, a lower sky-platform begins to slide loose from its stone anchors after a night of heavy cloud-wash. It will not fall far, but if it drifts away it will take the stair-bridge, water barrels, and the only safe path between two homes with it.
Mira and the Ringing Threads
On the Tarnedrift Steps, Mira hears Sella’s balcony bells ring by themselves and spots gray threads drifting toward a half-finished terrace. At the same moment, Tobin calls out for his missing cart rope, and Mira must decide which strange thread to follow first.
