Pinecones on the Loose

Mira stood on the mossy path in Juniper Gate Thicket with her little paws full of berry baskets. The baskets belonged to the small forest creatures coming through the narrow green corridor, and Mira was trying her best to keep them steady as they crossed the split stone and the low root arch one by one.

The thicket smelled sharp and clean, like juniper needles after rain. Silver light slipped through the branches. Everything looked calm—until a pinecone rolled out from the ridge above and bumped the first basket right on its side.

Berries spilled softly onto the moss.

Then another pinecone came tumbling down. And another.

Soon the narrow path was dotted with round brown cones rolling like little racing marbles, slipping between paws and bumping basket edges. A line of small creatures hurried up short and worried, trying not to lose their fruit. Mira darted left, then right, trying to scoop up cones before they knocked more baskets over, but the ridge kept sending new ones down faster than she could clear them.

One berry basket had already tipped. Mira stood in the middle of the blocked path, her blue scarf brushing the moss, while the pinecone trail still spilled down from above. Ahead, Sela’s calm voice called from somewhere near the split stone, and Moss’s quick whiskers twitched beside the root arch. Mira could sort the cones herself if she stayed where she was... or call Sela and Moss closer before more berries rolled away.
