The Cloudstep Rungs
The Cloudstep Rungs are a chain of narrow, wooden platforms lashed to the side of a very tall sky-garden tower, where the air is cool, bright, and always moving. Soft moss pads the boards, vine leaves brush at shoulder height, and the rails are wrapped in faded cloth to keep little hands from slipping. Below, pale clouds drift so close they hide the ground for long stretches, and the whole place smells of wet bark, crushed herbs, and rain that has not yet fallen. The tower is climbed by a winding path of steps, ladders, and hanging bridges that sway gently when someone passes. Small birds nest in the beams, and baskets of plum tomatoes, leaf bundles, and drying flowers hang from hooks in tidy rows. Morning is for watering, midday for shade, and late afternoon for listening to the wind slide through the tower like a soft whistle. Sometimes a loose plank creaks, or a ribbon of cloud curls through an open gap, making the Rungs feel both snug and high above the world.

Mira
Mira is a curious little climber who fits comfortably in both hands, with a brave face that hides how much she notices every tiny change around her. She loves the feeling of being the first to discover something new, even when it gets her into trouble.

Nell
Nell is a tiny bird-keeper who fits in a child's palm and talks to the nesting birds as if they are nosy neighbors. She is cheerful and bold, but she hates feeling left out of a plan and can blurt things before she means to.

Perri
Perri is a lanky vine-tender who stands as tall as a cart wheel and moves with a slow, thoughtful sway. He loves to pause in the breeze and listen to how each part of the tower is feeling, but he can get so dreamy that he forgets what he set out to do.

Tavi
Tavi is a steady tower-gardener who stands as tall as a doorway and knows the Rungs by sound, smell, and weather. He is kind, but he can become so focused on keeping his routines tidy that he misses what someone else is trying to say.

A whole section of the Cloudstep Rungs begins slipping downward one rung at a time, so anyone crossing the bridge must move quickly before the gap opens wider behind them. The only safe route to the next platform is shrinking while people are still on it.

Mira and the Wobbly Tomato Rungs
Mira spots the first sign that the harvest line on the Cloudstep Rungs has gone wrong, but the trouble is bigger than one tipping basket. As she rushes to help, she has to decide whether to call Tavi, climb higher, or follow the birds who seem to know what happened first.
