Coast & Harbor

Kelpbone Steps

Kelpbone Steps is a steep harbor built into a crescent of black stone, where narrow stairways drop from the cliff road to the water in uneven little flights. The steps are damp even on bright days, scented with salt, wet rope, and the sweet smoke from oven vents tucked behind the shops above. Between the stairs, old sea walls hold shells, barnacles, and pale streaks where waves have licked the rock clean. At morning, baskets of shrimp, stacked coils of line, and striped market cloths appear along the upper landings, while below, skiffs nudge against floating docks that rise and sink with the swell. The wind moves in surprising bursts here, rattling signs and tugging at loose hoods before slipping quiet again around the breakwater. Children and dockhands know the harbor by its landings, rails, and little turnings, where a person can pause out of the spray. Some steps are worn smooth and shiny, and one corner always gathers puddles that mirror gulls wheeling overhead, making the place feel lively, watchful, and just a little bit slippery.

Bran

Nessa

Nessa

Nessa is a small harbor baker who fits in a child’s lap when she sits on her flour crate, with a face often dusted white from the ovens above the stairs. She loves the feeling that a good surprise can brighten a whole morning, and she cannot help trying to cheer dull moods into something warmer and sweeter.

Perrin

Perrin

Perrin is a small harbor ledger-keeper who stands as tall as an adult’s knee, with ink on his fingertips and a pouch of chalk tucked at his belt. He lives among the upper landings of Kelpbone Steps and loves the satisfying click of things lining up exactly, though the harbor’s wind and water keep testing his plans.

Sella

The Hungry Tide Pools

The Hungry Tide Pools

At Kelpbone Steps, a school of hungry shoreline fish surges into the lower pools earlier than usual and starts stripping away the seaweed beds that shelter crabs, shells, and eggs. The Wind-Tangled Harbor

The Wind-Tangled Harbor

At Kelpbone Steps, the wind shifts hard against the harbor and turns every loose sail, hanging net, and drying line into a flapping tangle that blocks the steps and startles the smaller animals nearby. Something has to be done soon, because each gust makes the tangle bigger and more dangerous for anyone trying to pass.

The Splitting Breakwater

The Splitting Breakwater

At Kelpbone Steps, a low rumble rolls through the coast just after sunrise and sends a slow crack racing along the shell-stone breakwater that protects the lower village path. The breakwater may not collapse all at once, but if nothing is reinforced quickly, the next strong wave could wash straight over the steps and the homes below.
